In this context, we are going to share some information on the previous generation AMD 3000 Ryzen series desktop processors. We are trying to share every detail of that series of processors. So let’s start.

Ryzen 3000 Specs

With the release of AMD Ryzen 3rd Generation, we know what’s inside these new 7nm processors. we should experience a high jump in the performance, with reduced power consumption.

The 7nm Zen 2 architecture found in AMD Ryzen provides AMD to bring thermal Design power down to just 65W in the AMD Ryzen 5 3600. It also executes a considerable 15% hike in IPC (instructions per clock) performance.

The AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, AMD takes the performance of the AMD Ryzen 5 2600X to the sky, simplifying instructions per clock performance and both the clock frequency with the same price.

AMD Ryzen 3 3300X, which delivers a performance for much cheaper, and its lower speed CPU in the series is the AMD Ryzen 3 3100. The Ryzen 3 3300X boasts double the amount of L3 cache over its predecessor and manages to be about 10-20% faster with its 4 cores, 8 threads, and 4.3GHz in boost clock.

The AMD Ryzen 3 3100, on the other hand, has the same amount of L3 cache, as well as the same number of cores and threads. However, it has a boost clock of only 3.6GHz.

On the high-end, there’s the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X, an absolute monster of a processor, with 16 cores and 32 threads and a boost clock of 4.7GHz. These specs are stunning in their own right, but what takes it to the next level is that it manages to do it with a relatively low 105W TDP.

Next to it is the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, and while it’s not as impressive as the Ryzen 3950X – at least on paper – it still packs 12-cores and 24-threads of high-performance power. With boost clocks up to 4.6GHz, it’s an impressive amount of power for that 105W TDP.

AMD 3000 sockets are AM4. And, for about a similar price point, the AMD 9 3900X is between 25%-40% faster than the Intel Core i9-9900K in multi-threaded loads.

And there’s the AMD 7 Ryzen 3700X, which boasts 8-core, 16-thread, and a TDP of just 65W. Just like the Ryzen 9 3900X, it’s also an absolute beast when it comes to multi-threaded workloads.

  • AMD Ryzen 9 3950X– 16-cores, 32-threads | 4.7GHz boost, 3.5GHz base | 105W
  • AMD Ryzen 9 3900X– 12-cores, 24-threads | 4.6GHz boost, 3.8GHz base | 105W
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3800X – 8-cores, 16-threads | 4.5GHz boost, 3.9GHz base | 105W
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X – 8-cores, 16-threads | 4.4GHz boost, 3.6GHz base | 65W
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600X– 6-cores, 12-threads | 4.4GHz boost, 3.8GHz base | 95W
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600 – 6-cores, 12-threads | 4.2GHz boost, 3.6GHz base | 65W
  • AMD Ryzen 3 3300X– 4-cores, 8-threads | 4.3GHz boost, 3.5GHz base | 65W
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3400G– 4-cores, 8-threads | 4.2GHz boost, 3.7GHz base | 65W
  • AMD Ryzen 3 3100 – 4-cores, 8-threads | 3.6GHz boost, 3.5GHz base | 65W

Ryzen 3000 benchmark

The 3rd generation introduces a new Ryzen 9 tier encompassing the 12-core, 24-thread 3900X and the upcoming 16-core, 32-thread 3950X. The Ryzen 9 processors, in particular, have a huge 72MB of Level 3 cache, which is marketed as “Gamecache”, which should aim to mitigate the latency problem we witnessed with the 2000 series resulting in improved gaming performance.

We will be looking at the gaming performance of the Matisse CPUs, more commonly known as the 3000 series. With its higher base clock of 3.8GHz, a boost clock of 4.6GHz, and 12-cores to dispense, the 3900X leads the 3000 series benchmarks in our gaming suite, though not by much.

AMD’s  5 3600 with a base clock of 3.6GHz, a boost clock of 4.2Ghz, and 6-cores is the weakest processor in the line-up but doesn’t fall as far behind as you might think. For now, let’s take a look at the test system and testing procedures.

Ryzen 3000 vs 4000

What the 4000G processors are not are replacements for Ryzen 3000. Since the 4000 series uses identical Zen 2 architecture, the base technology for the CPU portion is the same. This means that despite the naming convention, the 4000 DOES NOT perform better than the 3000 in most CPU only benchmarks.

In fact, because having the GPU on the die essentially takes some power away from the CPU, you’ll likely see about 10% better performance from Ryzen 3000 vs. a 4000 at a comparable price point.

Ryzen 3000 vs 5000

In the comparisons, Ryzen 3000 and Ryzen 5000 series were tested for Processor Arithmetic (GOPS) and Processor Multimedia. So by observing the results, the Ryzen 9 5950X comes to the top of the list in both tests, as expected.

At this point, the processor m scores 611.91 GOPS in arithmetic performance and 2066.49 Mpix/s in multimedia testing.

The Ryzen 9 5950X is about 9% faster than the Ryzen 9 3950X.

The Ryzen 9 5900X is about 18% faster than the Ryzen 3900X.

The Ryzen 7 5800X is about 20% faster than the Ryzen 7 3800X.

It can be said that the AMD 5000 series projects an average of 20% higher performance as compared to the Ryzen 3000 chipset series in the tests.

We’re seeing a huge improvement in CPU performance here when it comes to multimedia testing. At this point, the Ryzen 9 5950X is 25% faster than the Ryzen 9 3950X, while the Ryzen 9 5900X is up to 35% faster than the Ryzen 9 3900X and even surpasses the Ryzen 9 3950X.

On the other hand, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X is also about 42% ahead of its predecessor Ryzen 7 3800X and even the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X.

Ryzen 3000 Price Drop

Ryzen 3000 processors will unfortunately not have a price fall after the release of Ryzen 5000. But some of Ryzen 3000xt models have become more affordable recently, but this is not at all the level and volume of discounts that can be expected when changing CPU generations

How to update bios for Ryzen 3000?

(If you don’t have an old CPU) Method to Update the BIOS for 3000 series.

Firstly considering a board with a BIOS flash feature where you can update the BIOS without a CPU, but there are plenty of boards that don’t have this handy in nature. In that case, you’ll need to update the motherboard with an old CPU support.

METHOD:

  • Update your motherboard in a PC shop.
  • Request AMD to send you an AMD Athlon 200GE for free (short term processor loan bootkit) which will require you to send in photos of your board and receipt to AMD.
  • Ask a tech buddy who might have an old AMD CPU for you to borrow for the update
  • Buy an AMD Athlon 200GE yourself to do the update and then sell it, but not a good option when AMD offers a free bootkit anyway (but perhaps you can’t be bothered waiting for them and you find a cheap one to buy at your local store, etc)

(With an old AMD CPU installed) Method to Update the BIOS for 3000 series

A video is worth a slab of text for software how-to, so check out the below step by step tutorial on how to update your previous motherboard’s BIOS to be 3000 ready if you require to do it yourself.

We wouldn’t explain how to update the bios using USB flash on MSI boards, as we least recommend doing it due to the issues mentioned above, but if you still want to give it a try despite the risks then Google is your ultimate friend to learn.
